Jerk Fest: A Culinary Celebration of Caribbean Culture in East London

In an effort to elevate the recognition of Jamaican jerk cuisine, the inaugural Jerk Fest took place in Hackney Bridge, attracting 6,000 attendees eager to celebrate Caribbean culture. Founded by Jackson Mclarty of Black Eats LDN, the festival aimed to rectify the historical oversight of Caribbean restaurants in the UK culinary scene, where no establishment has ever received a top culinary award.

Mclarty, who spent his formative years in Jamaica, expressed his passion for authentic jerk, stating, "If the industry won't give it to us, we'll give it to ourselves." This sentiment resonated throughout the weekend as vendors showcased their unique jerk recipes to the lively sounds of reggae and dancehall.

The competition featured 11 vendors vying for three prestigious awards. Yard 2 Yard emerged victorious, claiming the title of Best Jerk in the UK, while Quick Tingz earned accolades for Best Jerk Innovation. The Judge's Choice award went to Whats On The Menu Ish, recognized for their Caribbean seafood offerings. The festival not only highlighted culinary excellence but also emphasized the thriving Caribbean diaspora in London.
