A unique 1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500, transformed by artist Joshua Vides into a hand-painted masterpiece, is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer. This vehicle, which boasts an extensive 226,000 miles, features a striking black-and-white linework design that resembles an oversized sketch.
Vides, known for his innovative approach dubbed Reality to Idea, created this artwork for his 2025 exhibition, Check Engine Light, in Los Angeles. The SL500's original Brilliant Silver Metallic finish was wrapped in white vinyl before Vides applied bold brushstrokes to trace its iconic body lines and reflections, creating a visual interplay between the car and its surroundings.
Selected for its cultural significance in 1990s car culture, the SL500 holds personal memories for Vides, who recalls it as a symbol of status, often associated with a 'drug dealer car' aesthetic. The exhibition also included a Honda Civic and a Porsche 964, all displayed in an immersive environment that blurred the lines between art and automotive design.
The auction, which remains open until August 29, 2026, offers potential buyers a piece of art history that can also return to the road, as Vides has removed the portions covering critical components, allowing the car to be functional once more.
