Lacrosse Community Unites for Young Cancer Patient Margot Whinnen

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 1 min read

In a heartfelt display of solidarity, the lacrosse community is rallying around five-year-old Margot Whinnen, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia after experiencing severe stomach pains last Friday.

Margot's parents, Jesse and Nicole, took her to the hospital where tests revealed the shocking diagnosis. "She was really bad, complaining of a stomach ache, she couldn’t move," Jesse recalled. Margot is currently receiving chemotherapy at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and will undergo four rounds of treatment.

To support the Whinnen family, a fundraising event called 'Stick It 2 Leukaemia' was held in Brighton, drawing hundreds of attendees. A GoFundMe page has raised over $63,000, reflecting the community's commitment to Margot and her family. Jesse expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support: "It’s pretty emotional but amazing that the whole community has gotten behind Margot." Traci Mathwin of Lacrosse South Australia noted the global response, highlighting the tight-knit nature of the community.
