Letara Secures $16 Million to Expand Hybrid Rocket Technology in Japan

In a significant move to broaden its capabilities, Letara, a startup based in Sapporo, Japan, has announced plans to develop large rocket systems following a fresh funding round of approximately $16 million (¥2.6 billion). This investment is part of Japan's larger initiative to bolster its space industry and foster homegrown aerospace startups.
Co-CEO Shota Hirai shared that the new funds will help Letara transition from its initial focus on hybrid thrusters for small satellites to larger applications in the space, defense, and security sectors. The investment round was co-led by Headline Asia, JIC Venture Growth Investment, and Incubate Fund, with additional participation from strategic partners such as NES Corporation and Toyoda Gosei.
Letara’s innovative hybrid rocket technology utilizes a unique design that separates solid fuel from liquid oxidizer, using affordable materials like plastic and rubber for combustion. This approach not only enhances thrust but also minimizes waste compared to traditional hybrid rockets, which often rely on costly paraffin wax.
Hirai highlighted that addressing key challenges—such as achieving sufficient thrust, ensuring performance, and controlling combustion—will be crucial for the company's growth. The expansion into large rocket systems aligns with the projected growth of the global hybrid rocket propulsion market, which is expected to rise from $848 million in 2024 to $2.6 billion by 2032.
Since its inception in 2020, Letara has evolved from its initial mission of developing satellite thrusters to exploring defense contracts and launch services, positioning itself amid a competitive field that includes other startups like Interstellar Technologies and international players from China, South Korea, and Germany.
The startup is now targeting commercial satellite operators, launch companies, and government contracts, with plans for an upcoming in-orbit firing test that will mark a pivotal step towards commercialization. Letara has indicated that it has already secured orders from various rocket and satellite companies, as well as the Japanese government, although specific contract values remain undisclosed.
Looking ahead, Letara is also considering the potential for using recycled plastic as fuel, a prospect that requires further research and testing. Hirai emphasized the growing demand for efficient propulsion systems, particularly for large spacecraft transitioning from low Earth orbit to geostationary orbit, as they navigate through challenging environments like the Van Allen radiation belt.
