Liquid Death's Witty Campaign Sparks Real Talk on Data Center Cooling

In an amusing marketing ploy, Liquid Death has partnered with former Philadelphia Eagles player Jason Kelce to tackle the hefty water consumption of AI data centers. These facilities are notorious for requiring vast amounts of water to keep their servers cool, with Kelce humorously suggesting that we could use human urine as a solution. "AI data centers waste millions of gallons of water," he states in the campaign, adding, "That’s why Liquid Death and Garage Beer have teamed up. We want your pee to cool these data centers." This tongue-in-cheek ad features a crowd cheerfully singing, "Let’s pee on computers together to save humanity!" while enjoying their beverages.
While the commercial is light-hearted, it inadvertently highlights a genuine conversation about alternative cooling methods for data centers. Michael Obradovitch, Ecolab's Vice President of Data Center Global Accounts, noted that various alternative water sources are already in play for this purpose. Recycled water, created by treating wastewater and sewage, is a prime example. Bruno Pigott, Executive Director of the WateReuse Association, clarifies that while pee itself shouldn't be used directly for cooling, treated wastewater often contains similar elements and can be repurposed safely.
As entertaining as the concept of using urine might be, Pigott warns against it due to the potential buildup of salts and bacteria that could complicate cooling systems. He explains that cooling techniques like evaporative cooling would be adversely affected by the impurities found in urine. Instead, the focus should be on treating wastewater effectively, as we already do in various industries.
Dr. Greta Zornes from CDM Smith emphasizes the importance of recycled water, revealing that industries have been utilizing it for cooling for decades. With the rising demand for data centers, she is now heavily involved in projects focusing on recycled water solutions. She mentions that in Loudoun County, Virginia, data centers collectively use around 200 million gallons of recycled water daily, though that only meets 43% of their total water needs.
The infrastructure necessary for extensive recycling efforts is still developing, posing a challenge for data centers located in rural areas, where wastewater treatment facilities may not be sufficiently equipped. Zornes highlights the need for larger facilities to accommodate the high water demands of these centers.
On a positive note, companies like Meta are investing in local wastewater infrastructure, which could help alleviate some of the burden on potable water supplies. Obradovitch points out that data centers can significantly contribute to community water infrastructure, turning them into anchors for sustainable water management.
Pigott is also advocating for tax incentives to encourage industries to invest in recycled water infrastructure, suggesting a 30% tax credit could accelerate progress in this area. Despite the humorous nature of Liquid Death’s campaign, it serves as a crucial reminder of the environmental impact of data centers, with a recent Gallup poll indicating that many Americans are concerned about their presence in local communities.
Ultimately, while Kelce's suggestion to literally use urine may not be practical, the underlying message about the need for sustainable water practices in technology is a significant takeaway. As Pigott remarks, any awareness raised about water conservation is beneficial, paving the way for better public understanding of these pressing issues.
