Mike Nesbitt Steps Down as Health Minister in Northern Ireland

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Mike Nesbitt has resigned from his role as Northern Ireland's health minister, a position he held since May 2024. The former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) faced mounting pressure over the controversial withdrawal of emergency general surgery services from Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

A UUP spokesperson acknowledged Nesbitt's choice to step down, expressing gratitude for his contributions to health and social care. They highlighted his commitment to addressing health inequalities and improving care models, stating he leaves a notable legacy, especially regarding long waiting lists.

Nesbitt, who served as UUP leader twice and was first elected as an MLA in 2011, is recognized for his prior work as a victims' commissioner.
