Missing Athletics Coach Found Serving Jail Time in Morocco

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

Leon Baptiste, the esteemed athletics coach and former gold medallist, has been confirmed to be serving time in a Moroccan prison for the sexual assault of a minor. Reports emerged over the weekend detailing his alleged disappearance, which began more than three months ago.

Baptiste, who was recently celebrated as England Athletics Coach of the Year, had been coaching several prominent British athletes leading up to major competitions. His abrupt silence left both UK Athletics and his athletes puzzled, as he only communicated a brief message in May stating he would be away from training for an unspecified duration.

A source from the Moroccan Ministry of Justice disclosed that Baptiste was arrested in Marrakech in May and has since been convicted. Initially sentenced to ten months, his term was later reduced to eight on appeal. Contrary to reports suggesting he was missing, officials clarified that he was not out of contact with the authorities.

In an email sent to his athletes, Baptiste cited health issues as the reason for his resignation from coaching duties. However, the nature of his imprisonment and the serious charges against him have overshadowed his athletic accolades, which include two gold medals from the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The absence of Baptiste has led to significant disruption for his athletes, including Olympic and Paralympic medallists, who found themselves without guidance in the lead-up to important events. In his wake, fellow athletes like Adam Gemili and Martyn Rooney stepped in to assist, but many expressed frustration over the lack of preparation.

As the situation unfolds, the UK Foreign Office has confirmed they are providing support for Baptiste, who traveled to Morocco with three other British athletes, all of whom have since returned home.
