Montevideo Hosts Pan-American Congress, Advocating for Balanced North-South Relations

The third edition of the Pan-American Congress wrapped up in Montevideo on Sunday, emphasizing the need for a more equitable dialogue between northern and southern nations of the Americas. Approximately 150 officials from fifteen countries participated, and the next congress is set to take place in Brazil in 2027.

David Adler, the congress coordinator, highlighted the importance of reframing discussions in the Americas to foster regional integration, peace, and welfare systems. Notably absent was former Colombian president Gustavo Petro, whose participation was cancelled due to concerns over potential sanctions related to allegations of drug trafficking.

Significant topics included the militarization of public security in the region. Brazilian senator Humberto Costa cautioned that recent US designations of Brazilian groups as terrorist organizations could threaten national sovereignty and pave the way for military interventions. US lawmakers also touched on the upcoming midterm elections, with Representative Jesús García advocating for prioritizing the welfare of working-class individuals.
