New South Wales Prison Officers Protest After Colleague's Assault

In a display of anger and solidarity, New South Wales prison officers staged a walkout following a brutal attack on a fellow corrections officer at the John Moroney Correctional Centre. The incident, which occurred on July 25, left the 55-year-old officer with severe injuries including a broken eye socket and nose, as well as missing teeth.
The officer was hospitalized after being allegedly assaulted by a 21-year-old inmate, who was initially released without facing charges for the attack. This decision sparked outrage among union members, leading to the protest.
Stewart Little, general secretary of the Public Services Association of NSW, voiced the frustration of the officers, emphasizing the perceived injustice of the inmate's release. "A corrections officer gets bashed and left with life-changing injuries and the guy gets released back into the community without being charged? That’s outrageous," he stated.
Following public outcry, the inmate was arrested and charged with grievous bodily harm after police re-evaluated the case. He is set to appear in Blacktown Local Court. A spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW confirmed that the situation was under investigation and reiterated the importance of staff safety.
