NFL Kicks Off New Season with Viral Dance Campaign

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 3 min read

The NFL is embracing the digital age with its latest campaign, "The Season Is Your Stage," which features some of the league's biggest stars showcasing their unique celebration dances—or "cellys"—in an effort to connect more closely with younger fans. Launched on August 20, this campaign aims to generate excitement ahead of the NFL Kickoff Game scheduled for September 9.

Created in collaboration with the agency 72andSunny, the campaign features notable players including Bijan Robinson, Dion Dawkins, and Travis Hunter. Each athlete is seen honing their celly moves, a nod to the celebration dances that have gained traction on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. Marissa Solis, the NFL's Senior VP of Global and Brand Marketing, highlights the importance of merging traditional football views with the dynamic landscape of digital fandom.

“I think it’s a way to acknowledge that all of these platforms are interconnected,” Solis remarked, emphasizing the need for the NFL to evolve with its audience. The league is aiming to attract a demographic that is younger and more diverse than its traditional viewership, particularly among women.

In recent years, the NFL has seen a revitalization in its fan base, particularly after the public interest surrounding the relationship between Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and pop icon Taylor Swift. This phenomenon, dubbed the “Taylor Swift effect,” has significantly boosted viewership among young audiences, prompting the league to invest heavily in its digital strategy.

“Five, six years ago, we started a concerted effort to reach what we call ‘growth audiences,’” explained Solis, noting the importance of Gen Z and younger millennials, who are often more engaged with social media than traditional game broadcasts. During the 2025 NFL draft, for instance, 30% of the TikTok audience was female, with 44% aged 18 to 24, starkly contrasting the league's typical audience demographics.

The kickoff week of last season saw record-breaking engagement on social media, with video views up 13% and minutes spent on socials up 25%. This year, the NFL hopes to build on that momentum. Solis noted that content types resonating well with younger fans include behind-the-scenes glimpses into players’ lives and cultural intersections with the NFL, both of which are featured prominently in this campaign.

“There are many times when what happens on the field influences what happens in culture,” she said, alluding to the unique relationship between sports and social media trends. The NFL recognizes that the virality of cellys has become a significant cultural phenomenon, making them an ideal focal point for this season’s promotional efforts.

The campaign’s creative director, Zach Hilder, explained how cellys were chosen as the center of attention for this initiative, citing their natural fit for platforms like TikTok. To capture these celebrations, 72andSunny even built a specialized studio where players could rehearse their moves with guidance from well-known celly choreographer Cam Bynum of the Indianapolis Colts.

The resulting ad artfully blends player rehearsals with clips of fans creating their own interpretations of cellys, highlighting the interactivity of the campaign. Hilder noted that players were encouraged to bring their own ideas to the table, producing unexpected moments like a gear-shifting dance from Texans wide receiver Nico Collins.

As the season unfolds, Solis aims to maintain excitement through various social media initiatives, including live celly studios and potential appearances at local bars. Fans can look forward to new moves making their way onto the field, all while the NFL continues to innovate its approach to fan engagement.
