Nordic Walking: The Finnish Fitness Trend Set to Captivate the World

By Editor • August 30, 2026 • 1 min read

The allure of Nordic wellness is on the brink of a global explosion, following years of cultural exploration and lifestyle trends from the region. From the Swedish concept of lagom to the Finnish philosophy of sisu, the Nordic ethos emphasizes balance, sustainability, and a deep connection to nature.

The latest trend to capture attention is Nordic walking, which has its roots in the training of cross-country skiers. This low-impact exercise, distinguished from traditional hiking, utilizes specially designed poles to engage the entire body while minimizing stress on the knees. Originating in the 1930s as a summer training method, it was later popularized by PE teacher Leena Jääskeläinen in 1966.

Aki Karihtala, president of the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA), recalls his introduction to the activity in 1998. “It takes people back to nature,” he states, emphasizing its social and efficient appeal. By 1998, more than 500,000 Finns had already embraced this activity, reflecting its accessibility across diverse demographics.

Katja Presnal, a trend expert and recent convert to Nordic walking, highlights the connection to her childhood in the Finnish countryside. After years of observing trends, she shifted her focus to a lifestyle that prioritizes wellness. “It was about making everyday life a wellness regimen,” she explains, noting the enriching experiences she now cultivates in her rural environment.

As people increasingly seek ways to connect with nature and each other, Nordic walking offers an approachable entry point. Presnal observes, “People are now discovering Nordic lifestyles,” pointing out the potential for this practice to become a significant global trend.
