By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 3 min read

King Harald V of Norway has passed away at the age of 89, following complications from a rare blood condition. The royal palace in Oslo confirmed that he died peacefully on Friday at 06:35 local time. In a show of mourning, the royal flag has been lowered to half-mast atop the palace.

King Harald, who was the first monarch born in Norway since the 14th century, is succeeded by his son, Haakon, who is now 53. An extraordinary council of state is scheduled later today to address the transition. The new king has received condolences from global leaders, including King Charles III and King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, highlighting the late king’s impact on international relations.

Throughout his 35-year reign, King Harald was recognized as a beloved figure who modernized the monarchy and broke traditions by marrying a commoner. His down-to-earth demeanor earned him the title of the "People’s king," a legacy passed down from his father, King Olav V. His ability to connect with the public, especially during crises, helped solidify his place in the hearts of Norwegians.

Royal experts noted King Harald's significant role in promoting transparency within the monarchy. He faced challenges that included the aftermath of the 2011 terror attacks in Norway, where he urged unity and resilience among his people. In recent years, however, the royal family has encountered scandals and health issues, particularly involving his daughter-in-law Mette-Marit and her son, Marius Borg Høiby, whose legal troubles have cast a shadow over the family.

Harald's reign marked a period of transformation for the Norwegian monarchy, making it more accessible and relatable to the public. He became king in 1991 after serving as regent when his father fell ill. Over time, he evolved from a reserved figure to one who openly expressed empathy and emotion, especially during national tragedies.

As a passionate supporter of sports, King Harald famously welcomed Norway's national football team when they returned from the World Cup quarter-finals, embodying his dedication to the nation. He was also an accomplished sailor and served as president of the Norwegian chapter of the WWF for two decades, demonstrating his commitment to environmental issues.

Born on February 21, 1937, King Harald's early years were marked by the upheaval of World War II, during which his family fled to the United States. He returned to Norway post-war and eventually pursued an education in social sciences at Oxford. His marriage to Sonja Haraldsen in 1968 was groundbreaking and set a precedent for future royal unions.

In his later years, King Harald faced health challenges, including a rare condition known as haemolytic anaemia. He had been hospitalized since August 17, 2023, leading to his son taking on regent duties. The royal family has endured considerable scrutiny, with public interest magnified by recent events surrounding Mette-Marit and Marius.

King Harald leaves behind his wife of nearly 58 years, Queen Sonja, their children, Princess Märtha Louise and King Haakon, along with six grandchildren. His legacy as a unifying and reformative leader will long be remembered by the people of Norway.
