OpenAI Introduces Advertising on ChatGPT Free and Go Tiers in India

By Editor • August 27, 2026 • 1 min read

OpenAI has announced that it will begin displaying ads on its ChatGPT Free and Go tiers for users in India. This decision follows a recent update to the company's terms of service, which now include provisions for advertising during user interactions with the AI assistant.

As of February, ChatGPT boasts over 100 million weekly active users in India, with a significant portion utilizing the free or affordable Go plans. Starting next month, OpenAI will showcase advertisements for 50 different brands, partnering with WPP and Omnicom to facilitate this initiative.

The company will also roll out an ad manager, empowering marketers to design their campaigns with a minimum daily budget of ₹725 ($7.60). Dave Dugan, OpenAI's head of global ads solutions, emphasized that these ads will allow businesses of all sizes to engage with potential customers at critical decision-making moments.

This advertising strategy aligns with OpenAI's broader goal of enhancing revenue streams ahead of a potential IPO, expected within the next year. The company recorded $6.7 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, underscoring its rapid financial growth.
