Pacific Bluefin Tuna Quota Sees Major Increase

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

An online international conference has announced a notable 25% increase in the catch quota for Pacific bluefin tuna weighing at least 30 kilograms. This decision, reached on Tuesday, follows negotiations that began during last month’s meeting in Nagasaki, where Japan initially proposed the expansion.

Despite initial objections from Mexico, bilateral discussions ultimately led to their support. The revised quota will rise from 11,869 tons to 14,836 tons for fiscal years 2027 and 2028.

Conversely, the quota for smaller fish under 30 kilograms will decrease by 6% to 4,823 tons. Additionally, the Eastern Pacific quota will increase slightly from 7,581 tons to 7,740 tons.
