On August 18, over 20,000 individuals crossed into Georgia from Russia, according to the Federal Customs Service. This surge mirrors similar trends earlier in the week, with more than 19,000 crossings recorded daily at the Verkhny Lars checkpoint.
Reports from the Russian Telegram channel Ostorozhno Novosti highlighted severe traffic congestion, with vehicles moving just 100 meters in two hours. The Verkhny Lars crossing, the only land route between the two nations, has seen increased activity since late September 2022, when many Russians fled following military mobilization announcements.
