Recreating Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Minecraft Workshops Explore Pre-Bomb Cityscapes

A unique initiative led by University of Tokyo graduate Misaki Katayama invites students to reconstruct the cityscapes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as they existed before the devastating atomic bombings in August 1945.
Since 2023, fourth- to sixth-graders have been participating in two-day workshops using Minecraft to build these historical landscapes, guided by archival maps, photographs, and footage. The project aims to deepen understanding of the cultural loss experienced by both cities during World War II.
