Rivian's CFO Claire McDonough Announces Departure for New Role

By Editor • August 27, 2026 • 2 min read

Rivian's chief financial officer, Claire McDonough, will be stepping down from her position at the end of October, according to a regulatory filing made public on Thursday. The company stated that her resignation is driven by a desire to pursue a new opportunity and to relocate to the East Coast to be closer to her family.

McDonough is set to join GE Vernova as CFO, a Massachusetts-based energy equipment manufacturer, as confirmed by the company and her LinkedIn announcement. Rivian clarified that her departure is amicable and not due to any disagreements.

As Rivian prepares for significant growth with the rollout of its R2 SUV, which began shipping this summer, the company is already on the lookout for McDonough's successor. In the interim, vice president of finance Derek Mulvey will take over the CFO responsibilities upon her exit.

Since joining Rivian in January 2021, McDonough has been instrumental in steering the company through a challenging period marked by production delays, rising costs, and supply chain issues. Under her financial leadership, Rivian launched its R1T truck and secured $12 billion during one of 2021’s most notable IPOs. However, despite its promising start, the company's stock has seen a significant decline from its debut price of $78 to $16.80 as of Thursday's close.

Although McDonough lacked direct automotive experience, her collaboration with the design and engineering teams, along with CEO RJ Scaringe, was critical in aligning Rivian’s vehicle offerings with financial sustainability. She also led the company’s corporate development efforts and played a pivotal role in a joint venture with Volkswagen Group, which includes a substantial investment in Rivian.

Reflecting on her time at Rivian, McDonough described it as a highlight of her career, emphasizing the company's journey from a visionary startup to a significant player in the electric vehicle market.
