Rugby League Icon Sir Billy Boston Passes Away at 92

Sir Billy Boston, a towering figure in rugby league history, has passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a legacy that resonates deeply within the sport. Born in Cardiff in 1934, Boston made a name for himself as a phenomenal winger, scoring an astonishing 478 tries in 488 appearances for Wigan. His incredible talent was discovered during national service, leading him to join Wigan in 1953 as a 19-year-old.

Boston's prowess on the field was evident from the beginning. He quickly made his mark, reaching the 100-try milestone in just 68 matches, and he became the first black British player to tour Australia and New Zealand with the Great Britain side in 1954. Throughout his celebrated career, he helped Wigan secure three Challenge Cups and the Championship.

By the time he concluded his playing days, Boston had amassed a total of 571 tries—making him one of the sport's all-time greats, second only to Australian legend Brian Bevan. His contributions to rugby league extended beyond the pitch; he was a pioneering figure who inspired many and was recognized with numerous accolades, including an MBE in 1986 and a knighthood in 2025.

Following his retirement, Boston ran the Griffin Hotel near Wigan’s Central Park Ground, where one of the stands was named in his honor. In 1988, he became one of the first inductees into the Rugby League Hall of Fame and remains immortalized in statues both in Wigan and Cardiff.

Tributes have poured in following his passing, including heartfelt words from Wigan owner Mike Danson, who praised Boston as a hero and a humble man. The Wales Rugby League expressed their sorrow, recognizing him as one of the sport's finest and most respected figures. Even after 56 years since his last game, Boston’s impact continues, with young fans aware of his legendary status.

His absence will be deeply felt in the rugby community, particularly in Wigan, where he was a beloved figure who brought joy to the stands. The sport has lost a true gentleman, but his legacy will undoubtedly endure for generations to come.
