In a bid to reinforce traditional family values, Russia has introduced a set of voluntary guidelines aimed at film studios, according to the business news outlet RBC. These recommendations encourage creators to depict family life positively and avoid any negative portrayals.
The document outlines a comprehensive framework for crafting movies and TV shows centered on family themes, including character development, visual styles, and audience engagement. Among the key suggestions are portraying families as stable units amid external challenges, and ensuring that love within families is not shown as a source of harm or distress.
Further recommendations stress the importance of family heritage, advising filmmakers to incorporate narratives about ancestors and shared traditions. The guidelines also caution against representing family love as conflicting with patriotism, suggesting that national pride should flow naturally from family values.
Committee head Sergey Boyarsky has clarified that while the document represents industry efforts to self-regulate, it is not a mandatory directive. The recommendations are still under discussion and not finalized, as confirmed by Vladimir Trunov from Tricolor.
As of March 1, 2026, Russia will implement a ban on films deemed to undermine traditional moral values, affecting both cinemas and streaming platforms. In anticipation, many streaming services have begun self-censoring their content, marking edited scenes with warnings for viewers.
