The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that Sean Baker, recent Oscar winner, and producer Samantha Quan will co-chair the newly formed Academy Marquee Theater Committee. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the Academy's engagement and outreach as it prepares for the 2026-2027 committee term.
Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor and CEO Bill Kramer expressed gratitude towards the new chairs and vice chairs, emphasizing their commitment to the organization's mission. "As a member-led organization, we are deeply grateful to all our chairs and vice chairs for their leadership and engagement across the Academy’s work," they stated in a joint announcement.
The Marquee Theater Committee will be pivotal in reviewing submissions and recommending theaters for the prestigious Marquee Theater List. This list aims to promote venues that showcase exceptional cinematic experiences, enriching the film community.
In addition to the Marquee Theater Committee, the Academy has appointed leaders for various other committees and affinity groups. The International Feature Film Executive Committee will be co-chaired by Michèle Ohayon and James Wilson, overseeing the rules and eligibility for the Oscar® category dedicated to international films. The Short Films Qualifying Festivals Selection Committee, which determines which festivals qualify for Oscar consideration in short film categories, will be led by Summer Joy Main-Muñoz.
Moreover, the Scientific and Technical Awards Executive Committee will be co-chaired by Darin Grant and Rachel Rose, focusing on recognizing innovations in filmmaking technology. Each committee and affinity group is structured to advance significant initiatives, inform Academy policy, and enhance member engagement through shared interests.
Academy affinity groups have been established to foster community among underrepresented and marginalized members. These groups provide guidance on membership, awards, and educational opportunities. Notable chairs include Stephanie Lowry for the Asian Affinity Group and Taura Stinson for the Black Caucus. The Women’s Affinity Group will be chaired by Edie Ichioka, with Gennie Rim serving as vice chair.
The Academy Museum Inclusion Advisory Committee aims to ensure an inclusive experience for all visitors, emphasizing diverse perspectives in programmatic discussions. Meanwhile, the Student Academy Awards Executive Committee, led by Brooke Breton, guides the international college student filmmaking competition and the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Executive Committee, chaired by Kim Taylor-Coleman, supports emerging screenwriters.
