Seattle Sports Columnist Resigns Over Editorial Dispute

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

Matt Calkins, a longtime sports columnist for the Seattle Times, has announced his resignation, igniting discussions about editorial discretion in journalism. Calkins took to Substack to share that he stepped down after his editors declined to publish a column he wrote regarding anti-trans protests at a Seattle Storm game.

His column centered around a protestor, 16-year-old Ahnaleigh Wilson, who expressed her frustrations after losing to a biological male in a race. Calkins emphasized that Wilson, along with another athlete, Frances Staudt, did not identify as anti-trans despite advocating for the separation of biological sexes in sports.

In his post, Calkins argued that supporting such separation should not automatically lead to accusations of transphobia, asserting the need for honest dialogue on the topic.
