Simon Wiesenthal Center Defends Paramount Against Mark Ruffalo's Controversial Remarks

By Editor • August 23, 2026 • 1 min read

Jim Berk, CEO of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, has publicly supported Paramount Pictures after the studio labeled Mark Ruffalo's remarks as "antisemitic." In a statement, Berk emphasized the importance of distinguishing legitimate debate from harmful stereotypes, praising Paramount for its stance against prejudice.

Berk stated, "Invoking Israel in an issue where it is completely irrelevant is a textbook case of obsession and demonization," reiterating that more leaders should boldly identify antisemitism, regardless of the source.

Ruffalo, known for his criticism of Paramount's $111 billion merger with Warner Bros., cited Oracle's connections to the Israeli military amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. He referred to the situation as a "genocide" stemming from an apartheid system, sparking backlash from Paramount.

Paramount's spokesperson condemned Ruffalo's language, asserting that terms like "genocide" and "apartheid" should not be used lightly, especially in business contexts. The studio insisted it does not tolerate any form of prejudice.

Additionally, the Creative Community for Peace has called for a Hollywood boycott against Ruffalo unless he retracts his statements and issues an apology, accusing him of crossing the line into extremist rhetoric.

In response, Ruffalo took to social media to reject the claims of antisemitism, arguing that criticizing the Israeli government does not equate to a critique of Jewish people.
