On August 15, 2026, over 2,500 members of the Indian diaspora gathered at the Indian High Commission in Singapore to celebrate India's 80th Independence Day, led by High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule.
The event featured the hoisting of the Indian tricolor alongside performances by students from local Indian schools, who showcased traditional dances that highlighted the country's rich cultural diversity. Attendees enjoyed a feast of Indian sweets and meals, fostering a spirit of community and festivity.
In a solemn moment, Ambule laid a wreath at the Kranji War Cemetery to honor Indian soldiers who fought in World War II. He emphasized that over 67,000 Indian personnel were part of the Allied Forces in Malaya and Singapore, with 12,500 names etched on the memorial. The ceremony reflected on the sacrifices made by these soldiers, many of whom faced dire fates as prisoners of war.
Additionally, women from the Indian community participated in a project called 'Saree Circle,' which celebrated India’s textile heritage through workshops and cultural experiences, promoting awareness of the country's weaving traditions.
