Sumerian Pictures Secures North American Rights to Butthole Surfers Documentary

Sumerian Pictures has announced the acquisition of North American distribution rights for the documentary "Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt," highlighting the influential American rock band, The Butthole Surfers. Directed by Tom Stern, the film features a mix of archival footage, animation, and interviews with notable figures like Richard Linklater, Flea, and Dave Grohl.

Rob Williams, president of Sumerian Pictures, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Tom Stern and team are taking us on a wild ride and we are excited to bring audiences to the incredible story of these punk icons." This marks a significant move for Sumerian, which has quickly made a name in indie distribution, previously gaining attention with the award-winning film "Josephine" starring Channing Tatum.

The documentary has already garnered accolades, winning the SXSW “Best in Texas,” the Audience Award at the Philadelphia Film Festival, and the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the Independent Film Festival Boston. It is currently screening at various festivals and will have its theatrical release this week at Drafthouse Cinema, with a broader media release planned afterwards.

Known for their provocative style and chaotic live shows, the Butthole Surfers were pivotal in the 1980s underground music scene, with their radical approach countering the mainstream culture of the time. Their legacy includes being favorites of artists like Kurt Cobain and having their music produced by Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones.
