Supaform Revives the Concept of Conversation Pits with a Modern Twist

The conversation pit, once a staple of mid-century modern design, is making a comeback in a fresh and contemporary form thanks to Supaform, a Paris-based design studio. Their latest installation, Transit Encounters, debuted at the 2026 Milan Design Week and reinterprets this nostalgic seating arrangement as a vibrant hub for social interaction.

Maxim Shcherbakov, the mind behind Supaform, crafted a plush green seating area that deviates from the traditional recessed design. Instead, it features a raised platform with a central low table equipped with a built-in turntable. This modern take on the conversation pit invites users to engage in various activities—lounging, deep conversation, and even impromptu performances—creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages communal gatherings.

Shcherbakov reflects on the essence of the conversation pit, noting, "I often find myself sitting on the floor opposite the coffee table, leaning my back against the sofa… We also interact with what you might call its aura." By focusing on the interaction between people and their space, he aims to extend the seating's functionality beyond mere physical dimensions.

During its exhibition, Transit Encounters became a bustling center for discussions and music, showcasing its ability to foster connections. Visitors initially hesitated to step into the seating area, but as one person broke the ice, others quickly followed, exploring the arrangement's various heights and configurations. The installation transformed into an interactive experience where attendees not only sat but also engaged with musicians up close during live performances.

The pitfalls of traditional conversation pits, which were criticized in the 1960s for safety and practicality issues, are cleverly avoided in Shcherbakov's design. His elevated seating eliminates the risks associated with having a hole in the floor while maintaining the cozy, community-oriented feel that made conversation pits popular. The soft, velvet cushions and adaptable seating options promote a sense of comfort and ease.

Throughout the event, Shcherbakov found himself unexpectedly drawn into the role of DJ, as the intimate setting encouraged spontaneous interactions. He recalls, “I looked up and suddenly realized that I was sitting in a room full of people who had gathered around me, waiting for the musical event to begin.” With a stack of his own records at hand, he embraced the moment, further highlighting the potential for creativity and connection within the space.

As the crowd filled the seating area, Shcherbakov watched with satisfaction as the design transcended its physical form, allowing individuals to discover new ways to engage with one another. “It was amazing to see the design come to life and actually work in practice,” he remarked, showcasing how the modern conversation pit can facilitate a lively exchange of ideas and experiences.
