Syria Detains Former Officer After Austria Conviction for Abuse

Syrian authorities have apprehended ex-security officer Musab Abu Rukba, who fled Austria after being sentenced to eight years for his role in detainee abuse during the Assad regime.
Abu Rukba was taken into custody in Nawa, Daraa province, following a coordinated effort by internal security forces and the counter-terrorism department, according to state news agency SANA.
His conviction stemmed from a Vienna court ruling last month that found him guilty of bodily harm, aggravated coercion, and sexual assault against political detainees while leading the police's criminal investigations in Raqqa over a decade ago. He had returned to Syria illegally, celebrating his homecoming with family, unaware that authorities were tracking him.
