The Truth Behind Lake Como's Water Levels: AI Misleads Public
By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read
Recent viral claims that Lake Como in northern Italy has completely dried up due to a "geological rupture" have been debunked as false. The sensational report, which gained traction on TikTok, featured images and videos generated by artificial intelligence, misleading viewers with dramatic visuals of the lake supposedly reduced to mud and stranded boats.
The TikTok account @naturevsia, which posted the misleading content, is known for producing fabricated media under the banner of "AI News." Despite the disclaimer indicating its videos are AI-generated, many viewers, including some from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi, were convinced of its authenticity.
However, satellite images from the European Sentinel 2 on August 13 reveal that Lake Como is far from empty. Although the lake’s water levels have dropped due to drought—over 30 centimeters below the hydrographic zero as of August 1—this does not equate to the lake drying up. Local media reports indicate that the current conditions are reminiscent of low levels experienced four years prior, but the lake's substantial depth of 418 meters ensures it is not at risk of vanishing.
