Tragedy Strikes Grand Canyon as Flash Flood Claims One Life, Leaves Many Missing

A devastating flash flood swept through the Grand Canyon on August 29, 2026, leading to the tragic death of at least one individual and leaving approximately 15 others unaccounted for, according to the National Park Service.

The floods primarily affected the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas, prompting the evacuation of dozens. The body of a 46-year-old man was found near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River on August 30. Eyewitnesses captured video of the torrent, showcasing muddy waters rushing past trails and carrying debris downstream.

Efforts to locate missing persons are underway, with the park service coordinating with local authorities. As of Sunday morning, 62 individuals had been safely evacuated, although the number of missing persons was revised down from over 20.

The flooding has severely impacted the Transcanyon Waterline, a vital water source for the park, resulting in water use restrictions and a ban on wood and charcoal fires. Significant damage to infrastructure has also been reported, including destroyed footbridges and blocked trails.

The flash flood, triggered by rainfall on the Kaibab Plateau, began around 2:30 PM and has raised concerns for further storms and possible flash flooding in the days to follow. Visitors are cautioned to remain vigilant, especially during the peak flood season from July to mid-September.
