Tragic Fall of Five-Year-Old Sparks Safety Concerns in Social Housing

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 2 min read

A young boy, Aalim Ahmed, died after falling from a 15th-floor window in a residential tower in Plaistow, east London, a heartbreaking incident that has raised serious questions about the safety of social housing.

The five-year-old fell from the kitchen window shortly before 6 a.m. on May 16, 2024. His father, Makail Ahmed, rushed down from their temporary flat, only to find his son’s body. Aalim's tragic death is being described as "preventable" by his parents, who have expressed their frustration with Newham Council over ongoing safety issues.

During an inquest at Walthamstow Coroners’ Court, it was revealed that Aalim's mother, Sahra Osman, had repeatedly raised concerns regarding the safety of their top-floor flat, which she claimed was unsuitable for her family, especially given Aalim's autism and lack of danger awareness. When the audio from CCTV footage capturing Aalim’s final moments was played, the couple left the room, visibly distressed.

Detective Constance Joe Linton provided details on the footage, noting that a child’s voice is heard counting down before a loud clang. Following this, another child, presumed to be Aalim's younger brother, is heard shouting for him. Linton concluded from the evidence that Aalim likely jumped out of the window on his own, stating, “there was no evidence or suspicion he had been forced.”

The inquest also revealed that the family had biscuits on the kitchen table, leading to speculation that Aalim may have climbed to reach them. However, his mother emphasized that the windows had faulty restrictors, and despite her reports to the council, the issues remained unresolved. This negligence has left the family feeling vulnerable in what was supposed to be a loving environment.

Assistant coroner Ian Wade expressed his belief that Aalim, due to his age and condition, did not comprehend the potential danger of his actions. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with emergency responders visibly shocked. Mr. Ahmed was seen distraught, pacing and shouting about the state of the windows.

This devastating incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring that social housing meets safety standards, particularly for families with vulnerable children.
