Tribute to R.J. Kizer: Acclaimed Sound Editor Passes Away at 73

R.J. Kizer, a distinguished sound editor and ADR expert, passed away on August 12 in Los Angeles at the age of 73 after a courageous battle with glioblastoma, as confirmed by his family. His impressive career spanned numerous iconic films, including 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,' three Christopher Nolan features, and three installments of the 'Planet of the Apes' series.

Kizer, who garnered ten nominations for the Golden Reel Award from the Motion Picture Sound Editors, won the award for his work on 'War for the Planet of the Apes' in 2017. His extensive résumé includes contributions to films such as 'X-Men,' 'Deadpool,' and 'Hidden Figures.'

Born on September 27, 1952, in Long Island City, New York, Kizer graduated from NYU Film School and spent nearly fifty years in the Los Angeles film scene. He was a prominent figure in the film community, serving on the Film Academy’s sound branch executive committee and authoring a book on ADR techniques.

Kizer leaves behind his wife, Joanne D’Antonio, along with their son Christopher and four brothers. In his memory, donations can be made to The Huntington Library or the Glioblastoma Research Organization.
