Trump Imposes Steep Tariffs on Drones and Aircraft Components

In a bold move to protect domestic production, President Donald Trump has announced a staggering 100 percent tariff on imports of specific drones and aircraft parts. This new measure targets drones equipped with thermal cameras and those exceeding 25 kg (57 pounds), alongside all associated components.
Furthermore, a 25 percent levy will be applied to smaller drones, including consumer models weighing under 250 grams. However, there’s a notable loophole: companies can avoid these tariffs if they commit to manufacturing drones or parts within the United States, a strategy reminiscent of Trump's previous threats regarding computer chips.
Internationally, Trump has extended lower tariff rates to allies, including the EU and Japan, contingent upon the origin of the technology and materials used. The President's administration is also exploring initiatives to stimulate investment in U.S. drone production facilities.
Despite these efforts, the legality of Trump's tariffs is in question. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court deemed his global tariffs unlawful, and the U.S. Court of International Trade has also ruled against them. Critics argue that these tariffs ultimately burden American consumers while benefiting corporations that receive government refunds when tariffs are overturned.
