Trump Declares Strait of Hormuz 'Functional' Amid Ongoing Tensions

In a recent interview with Fox News, President Donald Trump asserted that the Strait of Hormuz remains "very functional" despite ongoing rocket and drone attacks. His comments come as tensions in the region continue to escalate, particularly with Iran and Oman engaged in negotiations over the vital waterway.

Trump emphasized the importance of the Strait, a major conduit for global oil shipments, stating, "It’s a functioning Strait. Yes, every once in a while there’ll be a drone or a rocket or something shot, but it is a very functioning Strait. A lot of oil is pouring out." His remarks follow an incident where a tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile, causing a fire that was extinguished without injuries.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have indicated that negotiations with Oman regarding the Strait's control are still in progress. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi noted that while agreements have been reached, the details are yet to be finalized. He also claimed that the U.S. is hindering diplomatic efforts in the region.

On August 17, Trump warned Oman against collaborating with Iran, threatening military action should they interfere in U.S. interests in the Strait. The ongoing geopolitical tensions are underscored by a recent mutual defense pact signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, aimed at countering Iranian aggression.

As these developments unfold, the U.S. Treasury has announced new sanctions targeting nearly 60 Iran-related entities and individuals, part of a broader strategy dubbed Operation Economic Outcast. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the measures as a means to apply "economic asphyxiation" on Tehran.

In a further sign of the tightening blockade, long lines have formed at gas stations across Iran, as citizens brace for potential fuel shortages amid the sanctions. This situation has prompted some to worry about the future availability of gas, as officials suggest a reduction in subsidies could be on the horizon.
