Trump's Crypto Ventures Under Scrutiny Amid Foreign Investments

U.S. President Donald Trump's burgeoning cryptocurrency ventures are drawing increasing scrutiny, particularly due to foreign investments linked to his family's latest project, World Liberty Financial. A report from the Wall Street Journal highlights that Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al Nahyan, a significant figure in the United Arab Emirates, holds a substantial stake in this planned crypto bank.
Earlier this month, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted conditional approval for World Liberty Financial to establish a federally chartered U.S. trust bank. This institution aims to issue and manage a dollar-backed stablecoin named USD1. Notably, Sheikh Tahnoon and his partners control a 49% share of the bank's holding company, WLTC Holdings, while an entity affiliated with the Trump family holds 38%, as reported by the Journal.
The UAE official's involvement raises questions about potential conflicts of interest, especially considering his $500 million investment in World Liberty Financial made just days before Trump's inauguration in January 2025. This deal reportedly funneled $263 million to Trump family entities.
Stablecoins like USD1 are designed to maintain a consistent value, and currently, USD1 is valued at around $4 billion. The funds backing this stablecoin are said to be invested in U.S. Treasury and similar assets, generating approximately $150 million annually in interest.
Trump's stance on cryptocurrencies has shifted dramatically. Previously critical of digital currencies, calling Bitcoin a “scam” and advocating for strict regulation, he has now pledged to position the U.S. as the “crypto capital of the planet.” In 2025, he established the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, aligning Bitcoin with traditional reserve assets like gold, and also enacted the GENIUS Act to regulate stablecoins.
Financial disclosures indicate that Trump has accrued over $1.4 billion from his cryptocurrency dealings, with significant contributions from World Liberty Financial and the $TRUMP meme coin. Founded in 2024, World Liberty Financial, helmed by CEO Zach Witkoff, is closely linked to Trump's family, leading to concerns about the interplay between governance and private financial interests.
