Trump's Nutrition Advisor Advocates for Fresh Foods, Including Hot Dogs, for Kids

In a surprising turn during a recent event aimed at promoting nutritious school meals, Dr. Ben Carson, President Donald Trump’s nutrition adviser, suggested that children should enjoy food fresh from the ground—citing hot dogs as a viable option.
Speaking at the Agriculture Department’s headquarters, Carson emphasized the importance of teaching kids about food origins and encouraging them to taste fresh produce directly from farms. He reminisced about a visit to a school where children were astonished by the taste of whole milk, saying, “I didn’t know milk could taste this good!”
Carson continued, “What if we introduced them to food fresh from the ground?” He highlighted the difference in flavor when children sample produce like tomatoes straight off the vine, but his mention of hot dogs elicited laughter from the audience. “They won’t have a craving for the unhealthy foods that are so prevalent in our society,” he added, promoting the idea that fresh food could reduce unhealthy eating habits.
The event also marked the unveiling of the “Harvest to Hallways” initiative, which aims to invest $50 million in school cafeterias, allowing for new equipment and grants to support the inclusion of locally sourced foods. This comes at a time when families are grappling with rising grocery costs, with the average packed lunch exceeding $6.
Carson’s comments follow earlier missteps by Trump administration officials regarding food budgeting. In July, Kennedy faced backlash after miscalculating ingredient costs on his cooking show, and Rollins was criticized for suggesting a basic meal plan that lacked practicality for many families.
