Typhoon Saudel Moves West After Striking Japan's Islands

Typhoon Saudel has passed over Japan's southwestern islands, leaving a trail of damage and disruption. On August 26, 2026, the storm was located 180 kilometers northwest of Okinoerabu Island, packing winds of up to 144 kph as it advanced toward China.
In the aftermath, two individuals sustained minor injuries; one was a 78-year-old woman in Uruma who fell due to strong winds, while a woman in her 70s on Amamioshima island fell during a blackout.
The typhoon wreaked havoc on local infrastructure, leading to the cancellation of approximately 150 flights at Naha Airport and power outages affecting over 30,000 homes in Kagoshima prefecture. Heavy rainfall was reported, with more than 9 inches falling in the Amami region within 24 hours, and the Japan Meteorological Agency warned of additional rain expected.
