UK Inflation Climbs to 2.9% Amid Rising Energy and Food Costs

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

In July, the UK's inflation rate increased to 2.9%, a notable jump from June's 2.6%, driven by surging energy prices and potential food cost pressures due to recent heatwaves.

The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rise follows a 13% increase in Ofgem's energy price cap, which has raised average household bills by £221, now totaling £1,862 annually.

While the government's Great British Summer Savings Scheme aimed to ease financial burdens through VAT cuts, it has not sufficiently countered the inflationary trends. Additionally, the Food and Drink Federation warns that extreme weather is causing crop shortages, likely exacerbating food inflation as we approach 2027.
