Unlock Your Core: The Monk Plank Challenge for Outdoor Athletes

By Editor • August 28, 2026 • 1 min read

The Monk Plank Challenge is gaining traction among fitness enthusiasts, promising to elevate core strength and overall athletic performance. As a certified personal trainer and outdoor sports lover, I was intrigued by this advanced plank variation that tests mobility, stability, and strength.

To enter the Monk Plank, begin in a runner’s lunge, wrapping your left arm around your front leg. As you shift your weight forward, raise your right leg and arm in alignment with your torso, balancing solely on your left hand and foot. This challenging position demands immense core stability, unlike traditional exercises that offer more support.

Despite my fitness background, I found it harder than expected. The requirement for hip and ankle mobility is significant, particularly for those with tight hips like myself. Furthermore, the strength needed in the glutes, legs, and core to maintain this pose is no small feat. As fitness trainer Sajedeh Arefi noted in an Instagram post, “Every second felt like a battle.”

So why should outdoor athletes care? Regularly practicing the Monk Plank can enhance core strength and stability, which are crucial for activities like hiking, climbing, and running. This exercise specifically targets the transverse abdominals, providing support for the pelvis and spine, essential for carrying weight or maintaining balance on uneven terrains.

Moreover, improved hip stability can help prevent knee pain and injuries, making this move a valuable addition to any outdoor training regimen. While many may attempt the pose just once, committing to it can lead to significant performance benefits.
