In a significant diplomatic move, Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi welcomed Axel Kicillof, governor of Argentina's Buenos Aires province, on Friday at Montevideo's Torre Ejecutiva. The two leaders formalized their collaboration by signing two key agreements focusing on agrifood and scientific research.
The first agreement involves Uruguay's Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries, Buenos Aires' agricultural authority, and the Metropolitan Agrifood Unit, which services greater Montevideo. This partnership aims to enhance production techniques, provide training, support small businesses, and implement strategies to minimize food waste.
Kicillof emphasized the similarities between the agrifood landscapes of both regions, likening the UAM to Argentina's Mercado Central. The second pact, signed between Buenos Aires' Scientific Research Commission and Uruguay's main public university, aims to bolster research and innovation initiatives.
During the meeting, Kicillof criticized the Argentine government's foreign policy and its diplomatic relations, particularly following President Javier Milei's controversial actions. This visit coincided with the third Pan-American Congress in Montevideo, showcasing progressive political discourse.
