Uruguay came together on Thursday to commemorate the life of celebrated musician Ruben Rada, who passed away at the age of 83 due to bilateral pneumonia. A public wake was held at the Legislative Palace, allowing fans and friends to pay their respects.

The night before, hundreds gathered in the Isla de Flores neighborhood, where Rada was raised, to celebrate his legacy with drums and song, connecting through social media and word of mouth. Rada had expressed in his song "Muriendo de plena" that he wished to be remembered through joyful music rather than sorrow.

During the wake, attended by political figures including President Yamandú Orsi and former president Julio María Sanguinetti, Rada's family and renowned musicians like León Gieco and Natalia Oreiro performed in his honor. The atmosphere was vibrant as attendees clapped along to the candombe rhythm, reflecting Rada’s deep ties to Uruguayan culture.

In recognition of his contributions, the government declared a day of mourning, ordering flags to be flown at half mast and covering funeral expenses. Rada's burial is set for Friday, with a procession commencing from his childhood neighborhood.
