US Eases Beef Tariffs for Brazil and Paraguay, Excluding Argentina and Uruguay

In a significant move, President Donald Trump has announced a temporary waiver of tariffs on beef imports from Brazil and Paraguay, effective September 1. This proclamation allows for the import of up to 300,000 tonnes of lean beef trimmings over three months, but notably excludes Argentina and Uruguay, who hold their own quotas.

The waiver, part of a strategy titled "Further Ensuring Affordable Beef for the American Consumer," will see up to 100,000 tonnes allocated each month on a first-come, first-served basis until November 30. The decision is rooted in technicalities that categorize the additional volume under "other countries or areas," leaving out nations with specific quotas.

Brazil stands to benefit significantly as the largest supplier to the US market, shedding a steep 26.4% duty that has been in place since January. Meanwhile, Argentina, which had its quota raised to 100,000 tonnes this year, and Uruguay, will not gain from this measure. Industry experts note that Argentina's current contribution to the beef segment targeted by this waiver is minimal, while Brazil's exporters anticipate some advantages despite discounting requirements.
