US Inflation Stays Elevated as Economic Concerns Mount

By Editor • August 26, 2026 • 1 min read

Inflation in the United States continues to hover above the Federal Reserve's target, marking 65 consecutive months of elevated prices. The latest data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index at 3.7 percent for the year ending in July, unchanged from June and slightly above economists' expectations of 3.6 percent.

The month-to-month increase surpassed forecasts, registering a 0.2 percent rise following a 0.1 percent decline in June. Core PCE, which excludes food and energy, remained steady at 3.3 percent year-over-year, while monthly figures rose from 0.1 percent to 0.2 percent.

This persistence in inflation may prompt the Federal Reserve to consider a rate hike at its upcoming meeting, with futures markets now reflecting a 42 percent likelihood of an increase. Economists believe the data supports such a move.

Despite a slight retreat in overall inflation, consumer sentiment remains low, largely due to the erosion of incomes, which have only increased by 0.2 percent when adjusted for inflation. Additionally, rising petrol prices, averaging $4.10 per gallon, may contribute to further increases in inflation in the coming months.
