Virginia Takes Down Three Confederate Statues in Richmond

Richmond, Virginia, has continued its efforts to remove Confederate monuments, with the state recently dismantling three statues from Capitol Square. The figures taken down include Confederate Generals Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Governor William "Extra Billy" Smith, and Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire, all of which had stood for over a century.

The removal was sanctioned by the Virginia legislature during its 2026 session, aiming to reshape the narrative of whom the state honors publicly. Former Democratic State Senator Adam Ebbin emphasized that this action does not erase Civil War history but alters the figures celebrated on state grounds.

The statues are set to be preserved by the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and relocated to battlefield sites, ensuring they remain part of historical discourse while reflecting on their intended tribute to valor and sacrifice.
