Welch's Frozen PB&J: A Hefty Rival to Uncrustables?

For many, the nostalgia of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches echoes through childhood, but as taste buds evolve, so does the appreciation for this classic treat. Enter Welch’s latest offering: a frozen PB&J that claims to be significantly larger than its competitor, Uncrustables.
Welch’s Real PB&Js come stuffed with creamy peanut butter and a choice of Concord Grape Jelly, Strawberry Jam, or Mixed Fruit, boasting a size that is 50% bigger than the popular Uncrustables, which have been a staple since their rebranding in the late '90s.
In a taste test, I compared a Concord Grape Real PB&J with a classic Uncrustable. The Uncrustable, lightweight and familiar, is made with soft white bread and has a balanced, though thin, filling of peanut butter and grape jelly that makes it an easy grab-and-go snack at just 210 calories.
On the other hand, the Real PB&J weighed in at 88 grams, noticeably heftier than the Uncrustable. A quick microwave thaw revealed an impressive amount of peanut butter that oozed from the sandwich, creating a delightful mess. The flavor retained that classic PB&J essence, but with a richer peanut butter presence, tipping the ratio to about 60/40 in favor of the nutty spread.
With 360 calories and 12 grams of protein, the Real PB&J feels like a meal rather than a snack, making it a more substantial option for those craving a filling bite. While both sandwiches have their merits, they cater to different needs: the Uncrustable remains ideal for quick snacks, while Welch’s offers a more satisfying, sandwich-like experience.
