X Corp Takes Legal Action Against Nitter for Alleged Data Scraping

Nitter, an open-source platform that enables users to view posts from X without needing an account or the official app, is facing legal challenges from X Corp. The social media giant has sent cease-and-desist letters demanding the shutdown of Nitter, following previous unsuccessful attempts to take the service offline through technical means.
The announcement was made on Nitter's website, revealing that the main instance, Nitter.net, is currently offline while its creator, known as Zedeus, seeks legal counsel. In a statement to TechCrunch, Zedeus confirmed that other Nitter instances also received similar legal threats, indicating a broader crackdown on the project.
The cease-and-desist letter, viewed by TechCrunch, accuses Nitter of unlawfully using X’s Application Programming Interface (API) and scraping data. It claims Nitter's operations violate multiple state and federal laws, including the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act and the Lanham Act. X Corp has mandated a shutdown by 5 p.m. EST on August 25.
This is not the first time X has attempted to dismantle Nitter. After implementing new API restrictions in 2024, Nitter's primary site briefly went offline. Despite these challenges, the platform had managed to resume operations until now, providing a user-friendly way to access X content without ads or tracking.
