A Clockwork Orange Set for Stage Revival in 2027

Belvoir St Theatre is gearing up for a bold new adaptation of Anthony Burgess's iconic novel A Clockwork Orange, with Margaret Thanos at the helm as director. Scheduled for the 2027 season, the play promises to resonate deeply with contemporary audiences, reflecting unsettling parallels between its dystopian themes and today's societal issues.

Echoes of Dystopia

Thanos, who encountered the novel last year, was struck by its relevance to modern life. 'I couldn't help but feel Burgess was not describing some horrific imagined future, but the world I and my female friends feel like we live in right now,' she noted. The story centers on Alex, a teenager who indulges in violence alongside his gang while navigating an oppressive society. His eventual capture leads to an experimental rehabilitation that forces him to confront the consequences of his actions.

A Collaborative Vision

Joining Thanos in this venture is Tom Wright, the playwright tasked with adapting the work for the stage. He sees the narrative as a fable about societal struggles rather than a complex psychological tale. 'It's a story about a society and how it deals with its demons,' Wright explained, highlighting the unique language of the book, Nadsat, that adds a theatrical flair to the adaptation.

Belvoir's Commitment to New Voices

The 2027 season reflects Belvoir's commitment to nurturing emerging talent in the theater scene. Eamon Flack, the artistic director, emphasized the importance of collaboration between generations of artists.
