A Harrowing Fall: Brandon Hinkle's Brush with Death on the Maroon Bells Traverse

Brandon Hinkle, a 28-year-old hiker, experienced a life-altering moment on August 16 when he fell 500 feet down a perilous slope while traversing Colorado's Maroon Bells. The accident occurred after he had successfully crossed from Maroon Peak to North Maroon Peak, a route known for its breathtaking vistas and technical challenges.

The Maroon Bells Traverse is famed among climbing enthusiasts for its stunning scenery and demanding Class 5 scrambling, which requires intense concentration due to loose rocks and significant exposure. Hinkle had previously completed the traverse and was accompanying a friend on his quest to summit all 54 of Colorado's 14ers. Their day began with excitement, as they took in the sunrise and donned their helmets before hitting the trail.

Despite the thrill of their adventure, Hinkle’s journey took a quick turn when he lost his footing near a cliff band. He recalls having no memory of the fall itself, only waking up in a hospital a week and a half later. The aftermath was grim; he suffered multiple serious injuries, including broken facial bones and ruptured tendons in his left knee. Hinkle’s vivid recollections of the fall are hazy, yet he remembers the terrifying sensation of falling and the distant sound of rescue helicopters.

After the fall, fellow hikers rushed to his aid, applying initial trauma care and keeping him awake while waiting for help. Hinkle's condition was grave, with visible injuries that shocked those who found him. Fortunately, he was stabilized before being airlifted to the hospital, where he faced several surgeries to address his extensive injuries.

Reflecting on his experience, Hinkle expressed gratitude for the support he received, emphasizing the importance of community in dire situations. As he recovers, he acknowledges that his future hiking endeavors may be impacted by his physical limitations, yet he remains undeterred by the risks involved in outdoor activities. Hinkle believes that the acceptance of risk is a fundamental aspect of outdoor recreation and that people should not hesitate to pursue their passions.

While Hinkle’s perspective on risk has evolved, he remains committed to enjoying the mountains. He encourages others to continue exploring, advocating for a mindful approach to safety without allowing fear to hinder their adventures. His friends have even set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist with his medical expenses, highlighting the strong bonds forged in the outdoor community.
