A Whimsical Monastery Wedding with a Twist in Sintra

When Taylor Rains and Carter Joyce decided to tie the knot, they envisioned a wedding that reflected their love for travel and romance. The couple, who first connected online in 2016, got engaged amidst the festive cheer of Brussels in 2022 while riding a Ferris wheel. With visions of grandeur, they sought a wedding venue that would encapsulate their rich experiences together.

Initially exploring luxurious venues in the U.S. and Europe, the Charleston-based duo realized a destination wedding would allow them to create memorable experiences for their guests. “We could curate all these vignettes and experiences that you, as our guests, could then enjoy and experience,” Taylor explained. Their search led them to a 16th-century monastery in Sintra, Portugal, which would become the backdrop for their unique celebration.

After reaching out to the London-based wedding planning firm Matthew Oliver Weddings, the couple found planner Georgia Haldenby, who resonated with their vision of a personalized wedding. Despite a temporary setback due to a family health issue that caused a pause in planning, fortune smiled upon them when Georgia had an unexpected opening, allowing them to proceed with their dream.

With a clear idea of their ideal wedding destination, the couple set their sights on Sintra. Georgia's suggestion was met with enthusiasm, as both Taylor and Carter had fond memories of the picturesque town known for its stunning castles and warm hospitality. “We loved Sintra. The castles are beautiful. The Portuguese people are so nice,” Taylor recalled.

Through the planning process, they made two trips to Portugal, finalizing details at the Penha Longa Resort, which provided both historical allure and modern amenities. Their wedding festivities included a welcome dinner at a charming pink mansion and the ceremony itself held in the enchanting Nuncio Gardens, surrounded by ivy-covered stone walls.

As part of their celebration, the couple incorporated elements that reflected their personalities, including a fado performer, flamenco dancers, and even drag queens, creating a vibrant atmosphere for their 100 guests. Keeping the decor understated, they aimed for a masculine aesthetic that complemented the ornate beauty of the venue, inspired by Ralph Lauren’s late '90s equestrian style.

With a focus on simplicity, their floral arrangements were minimal, enhancing rather than overshadowing the historical charm of their surroundings. The reception featured elegant candlelight and thoughtful details that allowed the beauty of the monastery and gardens to shine through.
