Abbott Settles for $385 Million Over Baby Formula Plant Contamination Claims

Abbott Laboratories has reached a settlement of $385 million to address ongoing claims related to contamination issues at its Sturgis, Michigan baby formula plant, the largest facility of its kind in the United States. This settlement comes in the wake of a significant baby formula shortage in 2022, which was exacerbated by the problems at this facility.

The contaminated plant prompted a recall of multiple powdered infant formula brands, including Similac, and resulted in legal action from the Justice Department. Although Abbott asserts that the settlement does not imply any admission of fault or liability, it also addresses lawsuits from various state Attorneys General and other relators.

In light of the controversies, Abbott informed that tests conducted by government regulators on unopened products from the homes of infants involved in the investigation returned negative results for Cronobacter sakazakii, the bacterium linked to illnesses in infants. Notably, Abbott stated that no distributed infant formulas have ever tested positive for this bacterium. Following the closure of the Sturgis facility in February 2022, prompted by an FDA investigation, the plant was successfully reopened by June of the same year.
