AI-Enhanced Burglary: French Nationals Admit to Canberra Heist

In a remarkable case intertwining technology and crime, four French citizens have pleaded guilty to breaking into a luxury home in Canberra and stealing high-value items, with one defendant utilizing artificial intelligence to pinpoint their target.

The defendants, Ilyes Abdelkader, Mohamed Abdelkader, Mohamed Naimi, and Antoni Voisin, admitted to the charges of aggravated burglary and joint commission theft during proceedings in the ACT Supreme Court. The incident, which took place in October of last year, involved the theft of designer jewelry, handbags, and a significant amount of cash.

AI as a Tool for Theft

Prosecutors revealed that Ilyes Abdelkader employed ChatGPT to analyze social media images for clues about a home in Canberra's affluent areas. His research led to the identification of a property that featured a cherry blossom tree and Black Mountain Tower, both indicators of its location. The victims had publicly shared images showcasing their luxury goods, including a $5 million Richard Mille RM88 watch, which remains unaccounted for.

From Thailand to Canberra: The Heist Unfolds

After arriving in Sydney from Thailand on October 7, the group executed their plan by breaking into the Canberra residence while the homeowners were away. They gained entry by smashing a window with tree trunks and accessed a safe that the victims believed was still locked. The stolen goods were later shipped to France via a freight service.

Following their arrest at a KFC in Wentworthville on October 19, the men have remained in custody. As the ACT Supreme Court prepares to set a sentencing date, the valuation of the stolen items has been revised significantly from an initial $10 million to just under $2 million, with some items still missing.
