Air Traffic Controller Shortage Disrupts Flights at Sydney Airport

Sydney Airport faced significant flight disruptions on Friday morning due to a critical shortage of air traffic controllers, leading to cancellations and delays impacting numerous travelers.

According to Airservices Australia, the federal agency managing the country's air traffic, Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) measures were implemented to cope with roster constraints. Although these measures were lifted by 8:15 a.m. (2215 GMT Thursday), minor delays of up to 10 minutes were still anticipated for the remainder of the morning.

A spokesperson for Airservices acknowledged that these ATFM measures could disrupt airline schedules, emphasizing the agency's commitment to collaborating with airlines to mitigate delays and ensure smoother passenger travel. Qantas flights were notably affected, with some experiencing delays exceeding an hour and six flights being cancelled altogether.

The situation raises concerns as the airline industry continues to grapple with staffing shortages. Recent incidents at the airport, including a series of near-misses involving Qantas aircraft, have prompted heightened scrutiny into air traffic safety. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is currently investigating these incidents to identify any underlying issues.

On the same day, Airservices Australia CEO Rob Sharp and other executives are set to testify before a Senate committee examining the aviation sector's reliability and capability to provide services to regional areas.
